The 67-year-old Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader passed away after suffering a heart attack in the evening.
Ms Swaraj, who served as foreign minister for five years and was a popular minister in Narendra Modi’s first term as prime minister, but did not contest parliamentary elections earlier this year.
She became known for helping Indians stuck abroad by responding to them on Twitter.
Swaraj, who had suffered from chronic diabetes, had also been admitted to hospitalized in 2016 when she suffered kidney failure.
The news of her death prompted an outpouring of grief and condolences both from fellow politicians and from Indians across the globe.
“A glorious chapter in Indian politics comes to an end,” Prime Minster Narendra Modi said on Twitter.
During her decades-long career she had also served as New Delhi’s chief minister and had served as the leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha from 2009 to 2014.
The BJP leader, during her time in the external affairs ministry, granted visas to several individuals seeking medical treatment in India and earned broad admiration for her responsiveness and compassion.
