NEWYORK: New York City’s newly elected mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has vowed to work together to overcome the challenges facing the city.
He was speaking at a swearing-in ceremony and public gathering at City Hall.
The first Muslim mayor, Zoharan Mamdani, was sworn in at a public ceremony at City Hall. Mamdani’s wife, First Lady of New York City Rama Duwaji, stood along with him holding a Holy Quran.
A senior Democratic Party official administered the oath of office to Zoharan Mamdani, who repeated the oath with his hand on the Holy Quran.
The ceremony was attended by a large number of New Yorkers, including Zoharan Mamdani’s parents, as well as political, social and business figures from the Pakistani American community.
Attorney General Letitia James administered the oath to the city’s new Comptroller, Mark Levin.
Addressing the participants, Zoharan Mamdani said that this city is for New Yorkers. He said that we will fight all the problems together and he will try to fulfill all the promises he made during the election campaign.
“We will govern expansively and audaciously. We may not always succeed. But never will we be accused of lacking the courage to try.
To those who insist that the era of big government is over, hear me when I say this—no longer will City Hall hesitate to use its power to improve New Yorkers’ lives.”
“We will answer to all New Yorkers, not to any billionaire or oligarch who thinks they can buy our democracy,” he said
“The movement we began over a year ago did not end with our victory on Election Night. It will not end this afternoon. It lives on with every battle we will fight, together; every blizzard and flood we withstand, together; every moment of fiscal challenge we overcome with ambition, not austerity, together; every way we pursue change in working peoples’ interests, rather than at their expense, together,” he said.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams, City Comptroller and other prominent figures also participated in the ceremony.
Participants called Zoharan Mamdani’s taking over the administrative reins of the city a historic change.
Various songs were also sung on the occasion and the participants also raised slogans in favor of Mamdani.
