APPNA establishes Pakistan’s first genetic molecular lab in Karachi

KARACHI: Association of Pakistani Physicians of North America (APPNA), an organization of Pakistani doctors based in America, has established a genetic molecular lab for the diagnosis of physical and mental disabilities in premature babies for the first time in Pakistan.

The newly established lab, established at the campus of Jinnah Sindh Medical University to be inaugurated on December 19.

The newly established lab, located on the campus of Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU), aims to diagnose physical and mental disabilities in premature babies and identify genetic defects in children and adults.

Addressing a press conference, president of APPNA dr. Asif Mohi-ud-Din and general secretary Dr. Rizwan Naeem said that after establishment of the laboratory now it will be possible to diagnose the defects in the genes of any person, including children, and the diseases that will come in the future.

They described the lab as a “significant step” toward modernising medical diagnostics in Pakistan.

They said that an advance technology center was also being established in the Dow University of Health and Sciences.

They said that experts of the Association of Pakistani Physicians of North America (APPNA) was working on projects in different health sectors in Pakistan every year so that modern health facilities can be made available to the people of Pakistan.

They also briefed the media about the details with regard to the annual winter meeting of the association. They said that APPNA also established an institute of public health in Jinnah Sindh Medical University in which other courses and teaching processes including Master of Public Health for doctors was also ongoing.

Vice Chancellor of Jinnah Sindh Medical University Prof. Amjad Siraj Memon, Vice Chancellor of Dow University Prof. Dr. Mohammad Saeed Qureshi and other faculty members were also present on this occasion.
