Storm Dorian has made landfall in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia as a post-tropical cyclone.
The storm’s estimated maximum sustained winds were 100 mph (155 km/h) when it made landfall 15 miles (25 km) south of Halifax, according to the National Hurricane Center. Dorian is moving northeast at 30 mph.
The storm is still dangerous with maximum sustained winds equivalent to a Category 2 hurricane.
Weather officials say Dorian has left about half a million customers without power.
As the winds began inflicting damage in Canada, the storm was upgraded to a Category 2 by hurricane tracking services in both Canada and the United States.
Winds produced by the remnants of Hurricane Dorian tore roofs off buildings, downed trees, collapsed a construction crane and left hundreds of thousands of people without electricity in three provinces in Canada on Saturday.
The storm is expected to pass over northern Newfoundland and eastern Labrador early on Sunday.
Residents close to the shore were advised to evacuate as a precaution.
