NEWYORK: Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad has called for deeper and sustained interfaith harmony and people-to-people engagement to promote dialogue, peace, and compassion.
He was speaking at the grand Interfaith Iftar Dinner in New York.
Ambassador Asim Iftikhar termed such engagement as essential to counter intolerance, hate and bigotry and advance a culture of peaceful coexistence.
Ambassador Asim Iftikhar said Pakistan’s heritage reflects centuries of pluralism and coexistence, as a crossroads where Buddhism, Hinduism and Sikhism flourished alongside Islam, Christianity and other faiths.
The Permanent Representative said Pakistan has been recognized for advocating initiatives that promote interfaith harmony and peaceful coexistence.
He highlighted that Pakistan and the Philippines jointly lead a UN General Assembly resolution on the promotion of interreligious and intercultural dialogue, understanding and cooperation for peace.
The grand Interfaith Iftar Dinner brought together more than 500 participants, including faith leaders, diplomats, public officials, professionals, youth leaders and community members.
