NEWYORK: The Department for the Aging, a city government agency providing services to seniors in New York, has completed fifty years. The New York City Department of Aging celebrated its Golden Jubilee on the completion of fifty years of service to senior citizens.

The ceremony was attended by a large number of senior citizens from various communities in the city.

Department of Aging Commissioner Lorraine Cortese-Vazquez and other officials were also present.

On this occasion, the attitude of considering age as a barrier was discouraged and the message was given that age is just a number, and that abilities, skills and experience are more important.

Pictures of elderly people on various stands in the hall and various sentences written on them conveyed the message that age is not a problem or an obstacle of any kind.

The speakers said that giving importance to the advanced age of senior citizens distracts attention from their abilities, while the fact is that elderly people are still playing a full role in society today.

Participants said that asking someone’s age based on their physical appearance and ignoring the basis of age is actually discriminatory behavior and this is called ageism.

The event emphasized that society should end discrimination on the basis of age and recognize the capabilities and experience of senior citizens.
