NEWYORK: Pakistan has urged the United Nations Security Council to unequivocally reject and condemn the attacks against Iran since June 13, which are in clear contravention of international law and the UN Charter.
The call was made by the Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmed in a statement delivered at the UN Security Council meeting in New York.
Expressing solidarity with the government and brotherly people of Iran during this challenging time, the ambassador also urged that the Security Council should denounce the attacks on IAEA-safeguarded nuclear facilities, which violate Security Council and IAEA resolutions, as well as international humanitarian law.
He said as the body entrusted with primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security, the UN Security Council must act urgently and decisively.
Ambassador Asim Iftikhar said these attacks set a dangerous precedent and pose a grave threat to the safety and security of populations across the region and indeed the world.
He said the UN Security Council should also promote urgent recourse to dialogue and diplomacy, consistent with the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, to find a peaceful and lasting resolution to the Iranian nuclear issue.
Ambassador Asim Iftikhar said Pakistan, China, and Russia have proposed a resolution calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in the region.
The resolution also urged all parties to refrain from further escalation and demanded the urgent protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure.
It also supported a diplomatic path forward on the Iranian nuclear issue that is acceptable to all parties.
Speaking during the session, the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged the international community to act immediately to halt the fighting and return to negotiations on the Iran’s nuclear programme.
