NEWYORK: The New York Taxi Workers Alliance got returned the confiscated money to 60,000 cab drivers from Uber and Lyft.
The Alliance co-founder Javed Tariq has asked drivers to immediately submit claims for return of their withheld money as all remaining $40 million will be frozen after March 31.
The New York Taxi Workers Alliance had won a $328 million case through the Attorney General’s Office to recover the withheld hard-earned pay from Uber drivers after an eight-and-a-half-year struggle. So far 60,000 drivers have received their claims.
New York Taxi Workers Alliance co-founder Javed Tariq said that there were still $40 million left, for which 30,000 drivers have not submitted their claims. He said that they have obtained an extension from the AG’s office until March 31.
It is pertinent to mention that Uber drivers were filing claims for their withheld money at the Taxi Workers Alliance office in Long Island.
The Uber drivers were being provided free services. Alliance leader Mohan Singh said that we want that no driver should be deprived from his due claim. He said that families of such drivers who have passed away can file claims on behalf of deceased drivers.
The New York Taxi Workers Alliance said that the legal battle for drivers’ rights has been won with much difficulties and if drivers do not submit their claims, $40 million will be frozen and our drivers will lose it.
The NEW York Attorney General Letitia James had earlier announced two landmark settlements totaling $328 million with rideshare companies Uber and Lyft for cheating drivers out of hundreds of millions of dollars.
The settlements resolved the multi-year investigation into Uber and Lyft, which found that companies policies withheld hard-earned pay from drivers and prevented them from receiving valuable benefits available under New York labor laws.
