NEWYORK: Khyber Society of America celebrated its Pashtun Culture Day in New York with great enthusiasm.
The annual Pashtun Cultural Day in New York was started with the recitation of Holy Quran and secretary of the society Mohammad Nasir moderated the event.
Member of the New York State Assembly Michaelle Solages and Pakistani Consul General Amir Ahmad Atuzai participated in the cultural day ceremony as special guests.
A large number of Pashtun community attended the event where national anthems of Pakistan and US were played.
President of Khyber Society of America Zaman Khan Afridi congratulated Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages on her success in the election and paid rich tribute to her community services.
He also explained the aims and objectives of establishing the organization and shed light on social activities.
The event was attended by a large number of Pashtun community business and social figures, literature lovers, including Pakistani-origin Deputy Inspector Misbah Noor of the New York Police.
Special guest Consul General of Pakistan in New York Aamir Ahmed Atuzai appreciated the community services of the Khyber Society of America. Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages said that she has always stood with her voters and this relationship will continue in the future.
On this occasion, Khyber Society of America distributed awards to Pakistani Americans for their outstanding performance in community services in various fields.
The president of Khyber Society of America’s women’s wing, Zakia Noreen said that those who have negative impression about Pashtuns should have study the history of Pashtoons. She also highlighted the importance of unemployment program.
Earlier, Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism Communication Director Jehangir Khattak, Ateeq Siddiqui and others expressed their views.
The speakers said that the culture and traditions of the Pashtun nation have a long history while the negative face of the Pushtoon community was shown to the world from Afghan war. They said that Pushtoon culture is our real identity.
On this occasion, New York City’s small businesses chief of staff, Haris Khan, highlighted the business-friendly policy of his department, while the officials of the taxi drivers’ rights organization informed about their activities.
The participants also enjoyed the cultural activities, music and Pushtoo songs sung by local singers.
