NEWYORK: Speakers at awareness seminar on domestic violence said that preventing domestic violence is necessary to maintain family system.
The awareness seminar was organized by New Life Minority Human Rights Council at Coney Island in Brooklyn.
The participants women from the Pakistani American community were dressed in purple as a symbol of domestic violence awareness, protection and prevention.
New Life Minority Human Rights Council Chairperson Raheela Aslam and senior leader Dr. Salma Kausar briefed the participants.
They said that domestic violence is a serious problem in the South Asian community. They said that it is not only physical but mental, economic torture besides inhumane treatment of children is also considered as domestic violence.
Speakers were of the view that ignoring the incidents of domestic violence and keeping silent about these issues leads to increase of domestic violence incidents. They said that it is necessary for the women to use their constitutional and legal rights to prevent them from domestic violence.
The participants of the seminar also offered prayer for the demise of Dr. Salma Kausar’s son-in-law Sarosh Nizami in Dallas.
