NEWYORK: Experts belonging to different fields of health and environment at panel discussion said that Pakistan was suffering badly from the negative effects of climate change and the international community should support Pakistan for a long-term solution to face the growing challenges of climate change.
The speakers were addressing at a special panel discussion organized by the Muslim American Leadership Alliance and American Pakistan Public Affairs Committee at One UN Plaza during the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly to explore climate change and its long-term solutions.
MALA’s chair of the board Maha Rashid Khan introduced the guests and highlighted the theme of the dialogue.
Second Secretary of Pakistan Mission to the United Nations Aleena Majeed, Dr. Pervez Iqbal of APPAC APPEC and Chief of UN information management unit moderator Avishan Bodjnoud participated in the final discussion.
The speakers described this interaction as very important. They said that Pakistan’s share in global carbon emissions is less than one percent but despite the fact that it suffered more than 30 billion dollars in losses from the last flood.
Department of Health of Ohio’s Dr. Shakeel Sagheer and others participated in the discussion. The speakers said that the glaciers were melting rapidly due to the increase in carbon emissions and due to lack of dams as required, not only there was a water loss and but also causes floods.
The former governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, could not participate in this special discussion on the effects of climate change due to personal engagement. MALA’s Maha Khan read the message of Arnold Schwarzenegger to the audience. He said that we all need to work together to save the natural resources from being wasted.
