NEWYORK: New York’s taxi drivers stood up against private online cab company and New York Taxi Workers Alliance has announced to take out rally from city hall to Uber’s office for raising their demands of minimum wages.
New York taxi drivers have once again started their campaign against economic exploitation by the online company Uber.
New York Taxi Workers Alliance’s executive director Bhairavi Desai, co-founder Javed Tariq and others announced in a press conference held at their office that they will hold a protest march on Wednesday, July 17, from City Hall to Uber’s headquarters office against the company’s non-payment of minimum wages to drivers and other anti-workers tactics.
The leaders of the organization said that they had filed a case against the Uber company for economic exploitation of the drivers and some money had already been received due to court orders.
They said that now with the help of the Attorney General’s office in this case, the company will pay another $382 million and from July 22, this money will be distributed to the drivers and this is a success for all of us.
The New York Taxi Drivers Alliance said that Uber was violating TLC rules by shutting down the application after decrease in number of its users and if this action is not stopped immediately, drivers will have to bear loss of thousands of US dollars annually.
The representatives of the alliance said that it is the unity of the drivers and the union that our eight-year struggle is on the way to success, the unity of the drivers is the real strength of the union.
