MTA installs new fare gates at Queens station, aimed at stanching the fare-beating crisis

New York: The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has installed new fare gates at Queens Station, as part of a test of potential designs aimed at stanching the fare-beating crisis.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has installed new fare gates at Queens Station, with pedal straphangers in the doors allowing easy passage of bags or luggage.

Penn Station at 8th Avenue will be the second station to get the new setup, where new fare gates will be installed next week.

The new gates were developed by Cubic Corporation, the contractor for the MTA’s large-scale delay and OMNY fare payment system.

The installation follows the MTA’s experimentation with several models of fare gates commonly used in other major U.S. and European transit systems as potential replacements for its turnstile setup.

The MTA chairman says he hopes the department will approve changes to the station’s design that would allow the agency to eliminate emergency fare gates that are often left open, which he calls fare theft, named as ‘Super Highway’.
