Web Desk, Pakistan : A multi-story building collapses Sunday at around 7:30 PM in the provincial capital of Sindh and commercial Hub, Karachi, Pakistan. Rescue work was carried out late in the night with at-least 3 people reported dead and several others trapped under the debris of the collapsed building, 12 reported as rescued.
Densely populated old city area of Karachi, Lyari is located at the south of the city near fish harbor, considered a very congested area due to haphazard construction. Streets are always packed with people, most of which are labor work force and fisher men. According to locals more than 40 studio apartments existed in the multistory building with heavily population.
Sindh police and Sindh building control authority were present at the scene before the incident took place to vacate the dilapidated building. Some of the flats were unoccupied by the residents while many remained inside the building. Fresh contingents of Pakistan Army Engineering corps along with sniffer dogs and heavy machinery and Pakistan Rangers were on the dilapidated building collapse site among the rescuers. K-Electric ceased the electricity supply of Nayabad area of lyari as a precautionary measure for the safety of the residents, however resuming the power flow after an hour. Fire tenders were also standby near the collapsed site for any other danger.
According to Sindh building control authority on March 16th 2020, notices were issued for evacuating the building after the inspection of survey team of SBCA but the residents did not obliged to the danger. Survey team of SBCA declared the building debilitated and dangerous for residence.
Two police men were also injured in the incident that were later rescued and shifted to civil hospital Karachi for treatment. According to the rescue services more than 12 people have been rescued, while many remain trapped under the rubble. Three bodies, 2 men and one woman confirmed dead.
