Fifteen people were killed and nine others injured in a coal mine gas explosion in northern China’s Shanxi Province, local authorities said on Tuesday.

The injured miners were in a stable condition, according to the local media reports.

Shen Xuping, an official at the Shanxi Administration of Coal Mine Safety, said on Tuesday that the accident revealed a “lack of awareness of the rule of law and chaotic management” by the company involved, local media reported.

Shen said the accident was caused by activity that “broke the law and regulations,” although authorities are still investigating the exact cause.

The cause of the accident is still being investigated, Shen added.

The county government has also dispatched 15 work teams to deal with the aftermath and compensation for the families of the 15 victims.
