Hurricane Dorian made landfall on the Outer Banks of North Carolina on Friday, hitting the beach resort area with powerful winds and battering waves days after reducing parts of the Bahamas to rubble and killing dozens on the island nation.

Hundreds who refused to evacuate Ocracoke Island were stranded when the Category 1 storm slammed into the Outer Banks Friday morning, with 90 mph winds.

It has already dumped up to 25cm (10 inches) of rain along the coast between Charleston, South Carolina, to Wilmington, North Carolina, about 275km away, forecasters said.

Now, Hurricane Dorian is headed out to sea on Friday and may skirt the coast of New England this weekend.

Hundreds who refused to evacuate Ocracoke Island were stranded when the Category 1 storm slammed into the Outer Banks Friday morning, with 90 mph winds.

Meanwhile, hundreds of Hurricane Dorian victims have fled the Bahamas as thousands more anxiously await evacuation from the devastated islands.

The hurricane tore through the islands earlier this week, leaving a trail of destruction and a humanitarian crisis in its wake.

The official death toll rose to 43, but is expected to increase further, officials told local media.

In the Bahamas, there are 76,000 people in need of aid, including survivors with medical needs, pregnant women and children are a priority to evacuate.

With aid efforts under way, many survivors are scrambling to evacuate.  Frustrations mounted as survivors, carrying what few possessions they had left, complained of “chaotic” and slow evacuations.
