NEWYORK: Police Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch announced that the NYPD delivered the fewest shooting incidents, shooting victims, and murders in recorded history for the first seven months of the year and in the month of July.
According to NYPD’s press statement, year to date, there were 381 shooting incidents, beating the previous record of 412 set in 2025. There were 462 shooting victims, beating the previous record of 489 shooting victims set in 2025, and there were 149 murders, beating the previous record of 174 murders set in 2017.
For the month of July, the NYPD set new record lows for the month with 59 shooting incidents, surpassing the previous record of 75 shooting incidents set in 2025. There were 81 shooting victims, surpassing the previous record of 92 shooting victims set in 2025, and there were 21 murders, surpassing the previous record of 24 murders set in 2013.
Major crime was down 12.7% (9,919 vs. 11,367) citywide in July. It was down in all seven of the major crime categories and in every borough, with the Bronx continuing to lead the city, down 19% (2,384 vs. 2,945).
The department continued to deliver historic lows in violent crime in the city’s public housing developments during the first seven months of the year with the fewest murders (11), shooting incidents (54), shooting victims (59), and robberies (419) in recorded history.
The NYPD delivered these historic lows while also managing an unprecedented number of large-scale and overlapping events, including the FIFA World Cup, Fourth of July celebrations, Sail250, and more.
“This summer, the NYPD was called upon to manage an unprecedented series of major and overlapping events, including the NBA Finals, the World Cup, Sail 250, and the largest Fourth of July celebration in the country. Through it all, even as the demands on this department reached historic levels, the men and women of the NYPD delivered double-digit declines in major crime and record lows in violent crime across the city,” said NYPD Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch.
“For the first seven months of this year and in the month of July, New York City experienced the fewest murders, shooting incidents, and shooting victims in recorded history. These incredible public safety achievements are the result of our data-driven precision policing strategy and the tireless work of the members of the NYPD whose long hours and dedication continue to make New York City safer.”
