Pakistani Doctors Save Child with Stabbed Screwdriver Inches from Heart

Doctors at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Disease (NICVD) of Karachi, the city of Pakistan, saved the child’s life through a complicated surgery.

Arsalan,9years old, had a chest wound with a stabbed screw driver a few inches from his heart.
The surgery that went on for a duration of one and a half hours was headed by two pediatric cardiac surgeons and an addditonal 4 doctors.

Despite the seriousness of the case, many private and government hospitals refused to take his case owing to the difficult nature of the surgery and its risks.

According to the boys parents, arsalan lives with her maternal uncle where a lot of other kids were playing with screwdrivers. While running.around with the tool, Arsalan got accidentally stabbed with one.

Parents immediately drove him to abbasi shaheed hospital then, one of the biggest hospital of Pakistan, Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Centre, where they refused to take on the case.

He was then taken to NICVD where the pediatric cardiologist advised emergency trauma surgery.

The procedure was headed by pediatric cardiac surgeons Dr.Suhail Bangash, and Dr.Iqbal along with pediatric cardiologist Dr. Najma Patel.

Dr. Abdul Sattar reports that the procedure was highly complicated owing to the location of the injury being very close to important major vasculature but their surgeons showed immense bravery and expertise to overcome the difficulties and save the child’s life.

Arsalan is now out of immediate danger and is currently in the intensive care unit. Had the surgery been further delayed, Arsalan could have lost the battle for his life.
