Tens of thousands rallied in a large Hong Kong suburb, when clashes broke out as protesters hurled umbrellas and plastic bottles at police. After that, Police retaliated by firing pepper spray amid chaotic scenes inside a shopping mall that houses some of the world’s biggest luxury brands.
Some protesters took their anger out on a Bank of China branch, which they spray-painted, while others besieged a medicine shop, which was forced to close.
Police then raised red warning flags to order protesters to leave immediately. They later used pepper spray several times to disperse the crowds and beat some of the protesters.
The scene had calmed down when more than a hundred police officers in riot gear suddenly appeared and most of the protesters left.
Millions have taken to the streets in the past month in some of the largest protests in decades against an extradition bill that would allow people to be sent to mainland China for trial in courts controlled by the Communist Party.
