HUNTINGTON, N.Y.
Pakistani Americans of the Town of Huntington (PATH) are organizing a community program to raise awareness about what organizers describe as the growing spread of hate, division and Islamophobia during the election season.
The program, being organized under the leadership of the Pakistani-American community, will focus on concerns that some local political candidates are targeting Muslims and using divisive rhetoric for electoral advantage.
Organizers are urging community members to reject attempts to win elections at the expense of the Muslim community and to work together to promote a more inclusive political environment.
Muslim Liaison of Suffolk Democratic Party Ashraf Azmi said in his statement “As the November elections getting closer, it is important for Muslim Americans to recognize and respond collectively to rhetoric that they believe contributes to discrimination and division”.
The organizers are calling on community members to participate in the upcoming meeting and develop a collective strategy to counter hate, division and Islamophobia through civic engagement, community awareness and constructive political participation.
The program will be held on Saturday, September 19, from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Sunshine Restaurant, located at 275 W. Old Country Road, Hicksville, New York.
