NEWYORK: Pakistan’s Independence Day celebrations have begun in New York. Allama Iqbal community center organized the 26th annual festival at Coney Island Avenue to mark the 79th Independence Day.
A large number of members of the Pakistani American community participated in the Independence Day festival, including young people, women and children.
New York City’s first Muslim mayor, Zoharan Mamdani, attended as a special guest who was given a grand welcome by the participants.
Allama Iqbal Community Center Chairman Malik Nasir Awan and Youth Wing Director Hassan Nasir Awan welcomed the mayor on his arrival.
The participants of the festival were dressed in costumes resembling the national flag.
Addressing the participants, Mayor Zohram Mamdani said that it is very pleasant feeling to have attend this event. He said that unity of the different communities here in New York has been made this city. Commissioner of Community Affairs Faiza Ali called the independence fair a means of exchanging civilizations and cultures.
The participants of the event were waving the green crescent flag in their hands. They also warmed up the atmosphere by playing the bhangra to the beat of the drum.
Various stalls of various food items, oriental clothing and jewelry were set up on the walkway of the Independence fair, which attracted the participants.
Addressing the participants, New York City Public Advocate Jummane Williams and Deputy Public Advocate Kashif Hussain said that their department is the spokesperson for public aspirations and has fulfilled its responsibility even in difficult circumstances.
The American flag was also hoisted along with Pakistan at the festival, and local artists performed on the occasion.
Pakistani-origin officers posted in the New York City Police also participated in the Independence Festival.
Muslim Officers Society President and Deputy Inspector Wahid Akhtar and Police Representative Captain Ehtesham said that the unity of the Pakistani-American community always brings courage, and the youth should join the New York Police Department.
Allama Iqbal Community Center Chairman Malik Nasir Awan and President Tahir Bhatta said that the increasing number of Pakistani-origin officers in the New York Police is a source of pride for the community.
Renowned singer Rahim Shah, who came specially from Pakistan to participate in the event, warmed the hearts of the audience by performing the magic of his charming voice.
Later, the organizers and volunteers of the Allama Iqbal Community Center were awarded certificates of appreciation in recognition of their services.
