NEWYORK: The leader of Christians in Pakistan, Cardinal Joseph Coutts, has said that the United Nations should play an effective role in stopping the ongoing war in the Middle East, as peace will not come through speeches and appeals alone.
He was addressing an interfaith harmony reception organized by the Pakistan Christian Association of USA in New York.
On the arrival of Cardinal Joseph Coutts, the leader of Christians in Pakistan, to the United States, the Pakistan Christian Association of USA organized an interfaith reception at the St. Bernard Church in Long Island. At the beginning of the reception, representatives of the Muslim, Hindu, Sikh, Jewish and Christian communities led prayers according to their respective faiths.
The event was moderated by James Cyprian, General Secretary of the Pakistan Christian Association of USA, who introduced all the guests and welcomed them on their arrival.
The special guest of the event, Cardinal Joseph Coutts, who came from Pakistan, was warmly welcomed and a bouquet was also presented.
Addressing the audience, Cardinal Joseph Coutts said that the United Nations, an institution established for peace in the world, has failed in the basic objectives of its establishment, and serious efforts for peace must go beyond speeches and appeals.
The interfaith harmony event was attended by a large number of people associated with all religions and Pakistani American community members who appreciated the role of the Pakistan Christian Association.
The event also discussed global politics and the changing situation due to its effects. On this occasion, Sikh and Jewish leaders living in New York, including Pervez Rafique, an elected member of the minority seat of the Punjab Assembly of Pakistan, said that if love, respect, tolerance and harmony are promoted, then there is no room for hatred.
On this occasion, leaders of the Pakistan Christian Association of USA and others also spoke. The speakers said that at this time the world only needs peace and that is the survival of humanity.
Chairman of the Pakistan Christian Association, William Shahzad, expressed his gratitude to all the guests and participants.
Later, Cardinal Joseph Coutts was presented with a citation by Nassau County and an award by the Pakistan Christian Association.
