NEWYORK: More than 600 graduates of the New York Police Department have become police officers after completing their education and police training. Among the new graduates is Pakistani-origin Aqsa Tasleem, who is also serving in the US Air Force Reserve Force.

A prestigious ceremony was held at the Madison Square Garden Theater to confer awards to graduates and new police officers of the New York Police Department.

646 graduates have completed their education and have become police officers. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch conferred awards to the new officers including Pakistani-origin Aqsa Tasleem.

Aqsa Tasleem, a probationary police officer in the NYPD, hailing from the Daska district of Sialkot, Pakistan, has set a high example of public service and selfless spirit.

She is not only a pioneer in community welfare work, but is also fulfilling responsibilities in the US Air Force Reserve Force along with her official duties.

Speaking at the ceremony, Police Commissioner Jessica Tish said that when she became the first female police commissioner, questions were being raised about the future of the police, but today, for the first time after the four decades, such a large number of women have joined the police.

Despite the rigorous training at the Police Academy, Aqsa Tasleem volunteers for more than 25 hours every month with Wahid Medical Care, where she helps patients and supports staff with a very professional and compassionate spirit. Aqsa’s services are a reflection of integrity, compassion and civic duty. Her passion and service are a shining example for her colleagues.

Earlier, the Police Commissioner further said that due to the improved performance of the police, the crime rate in the city has significantly decreased.
