ISLAMABAD,
Seventh death anniversary of renowned singer Zubaida Khanum was observed on Monday.
Zubaida Khanum was born in Amritsar, British India, in 1935, in a Muslim family which migrated to Lahore after independence in 1947.
Zubaida did not belong to any traditional family of classical music and never received any formal music lessons.
She was given a head-start as a child when she was given an opportunity to sing at the Lahore station of Radio Pakistan.
Zubaida Khanum started her singing career from 1951 through Billo, but she came to public limelight from film Shahri Babu in 1953.
She earned a name for herself as the most melodious film playback singer of Punjabi and Urdu films in the 1950s.
She recorded over 250 songs, predominantly solo but also in duets with other playback singers especially her pair with Ahmed Rushdi attracted huge public admiration as they sang numerous hit duets.
Zubaida Khanum’s famous songs included ‘Aaye Mausam Rangeelay Suhanay’, Ghunghat Utha loon kay ghunghat nikaaloon, Mera Nishana Dekhay Zamana and Ae Chand Un Se ja kar mera salam kehna. Zubaida Khanum sung in several Punjabi films.
Zubaida Khanum also performed as second heroin with Zarif in film Patay Khan and performed the role of Sabiha Khanum’s friend in the film Dilla Bhatti.
Zubaida Khanum married film producer and director Riaz Bukhari and said goodbye to film industry.
Zubaida Khanum died on October 19, 2013 due to cardiac arrest at her home in Lahore at age 78.
