A doctor at Karachi’s National Institute of Cardiovascular Disease (NICVD) was shot in the foot by a policeman associated with the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) on Wednesday night. The CTD official was arrested by the police. SHO Saddar informed that officer Kamran is a CTD official deputed in Civil Lines.
The injured doctor, identified as Dr Fahad, sustained two bullet wounds and was shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Hospital (JPMC), where his condition was said to be stable. His statement, was recorded.
Local broadcasters reported that that the suspect Kamran alias kami had been suffering from psychological issues. Kamran was in the NICVD for treatment of his illness which he contracted a few days ago. Earlier, he had gotten into a fight with the staff of the hospital when he saw that they were not wearing masks.
Chaos at NICVD when Civil Lines police officer Kamran opened fire at the emergency ward. Doctors, nurses, paramedical staff, patients and attendants were forced to scatter in a panic, while one bullet shot from Kamran’s pistol hit Dr Fahad in his leg. The bullet went through one leg and pierced the other as well, leaving him injured in both legs.
Kamran fled the scene in an ambulance. Eye witnesses said that he was soon caught by nearby citizens, and the guards of the emergency ward, who chased after him. They handed him over to the police, along with the weapon they found on his possession.
Meanwhile, NICVD management closed off the emergency ward for cardiac patients, and referred all incoming cases to private hospitals.
The police took the suspect and his weapon in custody, and began investigating the crime scene. A case will be registered against him once the wounded doctor’s statement is recorded.
On the other side Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) held a press conference on the doctor Fahad injuries. Spokesperson doctor Qaiser Sajjad said that Doctors were risking their lives due to Pandemic Covid-19 and are working in unfavorable conditions and security issues.
The government must conduct a high-level inquiry on the injured Dr Fahad incident. Dr. Qaiser Sajjad also said that those involved in incident should be punished and doctors should be protected. Otherwise we will also announce lock down then who will treat the patients in this pandemic situation, PMA demanded to prevent such incidents in future.
