WHANGAREI: After early hiccups, Pakistan U19 on Friday defeated Sri Lanka U19 by 3 wickets in their third outing of the tournament at Cobham Oval, Whangarei.
With this win, Green Shirts qualified for the quarterfinals, securing a nervy success in a must-win contest.
Earlier, Pakistani captain Hasan Khan won the toss and sent put Sri Lanka to bat. His decision was backed by the bowlers, who removed half of Sri Lankan batting line for just 72 runs. Jehan Daniel (53) and Ashen Bandra (37) showed some resistance to Pakistan bowling and dragged their team to a respectable total of 188.
Pakistan’s Suleman Shafqat (3-29) and Shaheen Afridi 2-41) shared five wickets.
Chasing a mild total, Team Green batting line stumbled a bit, losing early wickets. But Hasan Khan (24*) and Muhammad Musa (23) took Pakistan home in a 189-run chase, with 39 balls in hand. Ali Zaryab was brilliant at the top with a patient 94-ball 59 to keep Pakistan in the chase when wickets were falling.
Lankan pacer, Thisaru Rashmika took three wickets for 47 runs.
