Trump says US downed Iranian drone in Strait of Hormuz

The U.S. has destroyed an Iranian drone in the Strait of Hormuz after it threatened an American warship, President Donald Trump

The Iranian unmanned aircraft was shot down by the USS Boxer, a U.S. Navy amphibious assault ship.

“The Boxer took defensive action against an Iranian drone which had closed into a very, very near-distance, approximately 1,000 yards, ignoring multiple calls to stand down, and was threatening the safety of the ship and the ship’s crew,” Trump said at the White House.

“The drone was immediately destroyed,” he added.

Iran said it had no information about losing a drone.  Iran’s top military spokesman said all the country’s drones had returned safely to base, after President Donald Trump said a U.S. Navy ship had “destroyed” one.

Iran has been blamed by the US for attacks on tankers which have happened in the world’s key shipping area since May. Tehran denies all the accusations.

The recent incidents have triggered fears of a military conflict in the region.
