COLOMBO: Courtesy of the brilliance of Kusal Perera, Sri Lanka have thumped India in the opening match of the T20 Tri-series at Colombo on Tuesday night.
Sri Lanka won the toss and sent India in to bat.
The decision worked as Lankan bowlers got rid of Indian top order early, but Shekhar Dhawan stuck to basics and later turned on the power-hitting mode.
With the help of his 49-ball 90 followed by Pandey down the order, India posted 174/5 after 20 overs.
Sri Lanka, when came to chase the target, lost Kusal Mendis early, but Gunathilaka and Kusal Perera added a 58-run partnership for the second wicket.
After Gunathilaka’s (19) fall, Perera kept building small partnerships with every batsman before falling on his match-winning 66 runs. When he got out, Sri Lanka were 127/4 in 12.3 overs and required another 47 runs off 45 balls.
Shanaka (15) and Thisara Perera (22) took on from there and chased down the total in 18.3 overs with 5 wickets in hand.
