ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Monday announced the schedule for Senate polls to elect new members.
The elections will be held on March 3, 2018.
Some 52 senators are retiring after completing their 6-year term in March.
A spokesman of ECP told Hum News that the provincial election commissioners will act as returning officers of the respective province.
Polling for election Senate members from provinces will be held at respective provincial assemblies’ buildings.
The polling for electing FATA and Islamabad members will be held at Parliament House.
The spokesman says the returning offices will issue a public notice on February 3.
As per the schedule, the candidate can file nomination papers from February 4 to 6 with the respective returning officer.
The returning officers will carry out scrutiny of the nomination papers from February 7 to 9.
Provisional list of the contesting candidate will be issued on February 15.
Candidates can withdraw their nomination papers on February 16.
The final list of the candidate will be issued on February 17, 2018.
What is Senate?
Senate is Upper House of the Parliament. Its total strength is 104 members. Half of the Senate, 52 senators, retire after every three years.
Elections are held to elect new members to replace the retiring senators. The Senate represents the Federation of Pakistan and each province has 23 members. Islamabad has four and FATA has eight members in the house.
