LAHORE: Prime Minister of Shahid Khaqan Abbasi discussed probable candidates for the Senate chairmanship along with party leader and former premier Nawaz Sharif who was ousted for corruption charges.
Abbasi arrived at Nawaz Sharif’s residence in Lahore to participate in a joint session headed by Sharif to review the available names for the chairman and deputy chairman of the Upper House of the parliament.
Nawaz’s party has bagged the majority of seats in the recently-held Senate polls on March 3. They are on the top with 33 out of 104 total seats.
Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz(PML-N) has already been negotiating with Pakistan Peoples Party for both posts.
PML-N has also approached Jamiat Ulema Islami Fazal ur Rehman(JUI-F), Jamat Islami (JI), Mautahida Qoumi Movement- Pakistan (MQM-P) (both groups), National Party, Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party(PkMAP) and independent members from Federally Administered Tribal Areas(FATA) and Baluchistan requesting their cooperation for the seats of chairman and deputy chairman in the upper house.
Raja Zafarul Haque, Pervaiz Rashid, Mushahidullah Khan, Khawaja Saad Rafiq, Amir Muqam, Mushahid Hussain Syed and other leaders have been assigned to the coordination committee to look after negotiations.
According to local media reports, names of Raja Zafar ul Haq, Pervaiz Rashid and Ishaq Dar are being considered for the said positions.
