By 2040, the airport is expected to expand to eight runways and accommodate 100 million passengers a year.<\/p>\n<p>The airport\u00a0spans 700,000 square meters, or 98 football fields, says state media.<\/p>\n<p>The new mega-airport, the second in Beijing, was designed by the late architect Zaha Hadid the shape of a starfish with five connected concourses, with four runways.<\/p>\n<p>Airport\u00a0is to include customer-service robots to deliver flight information and facial recognition-enabled check-in.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9936\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9936\" style=\"width: 620px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Interior-view-of-Daxing-airport-in-Beijing..jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9936\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Interior-view-of-Daxing-airport-in-Beijing..jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"372\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9936\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Interior view of Daxing airport in Beijing.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Critics have questioned the need for a second airport in the capital, especially one that is almost twice the distance from the city centre as the existing airport.<\/p>\n<p>Beijing&#8217;s existing airport is the world&#8217;s second busiest behind Atlanta, according to the Airport Council.<\/p>\n<p>But officials say a new airport was needed to take the pressure off the overcrowded Beijing Capital International Airport.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>China has opened a vast, multibillion-dollar airport in the country\u2019s capital, in the run-up to a major political anniversary.
