Search and rescue operations continue more than a week after Dorian made landfall on the Bahamas last Sunday.\u00a0 Smith said more than 5,000 people had evacuated to New Providence.<\/p>\n<p>The official death toll has risen in the time since to 50 people, but authorities have cautioned that number is likely to rise significantly as workers make their way through the ruins.<\/p>\n<p>Dorian slammed into the Bahamas over a week ago as one of the strongest Caribbean hurricanes on record, packing top sustained winds of 185 miles (298 km) per hour.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Authorities in the Bahamas said\u00a0 there are roughly 2,500 people registered as missing in the wake of Hurricane Dorian&#8217;s devastating onslaught.
