{"id":8588,"date":"2019-08-27T14:27:57","date_gmt":"2019-08-27T09:27:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/?p=8588"},"modified":"2019-08-27T14:27:57","modified_gmt":"2019-08-27T09:27:57","slug":"%ef%bb%bf-indonesia-to-move-capital-from-sinking-jakarta-to-borneo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/eng\/archives\/8588","title":{"rendered":"\ufeff Indonesia to move capital from sinking Jakarta to Borneo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Indonesia\u2019s president says the country\u2019s capital will move from overcrowded, sinking and polluted Jakarta to a site in sparsely populated East Kalimantan province on Borneo island, known for rainforests and orangutans.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed location \u2014 near the regional cities of Balikpapan and Samarinda \u2014 is an area at \u201cminimal\u201d risk of natural disasters, where the government already owns some 180,000 hectares (445,000 acres) of land, he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe location is very strategic \u2014 it\u2019s in the centre of Indonesia and close to urban areas,\u201d Widodo said in a televised speech.<\/p>\n<p>He said the burden has been become too heavy on Jakarta on Java island as the center of government, finance, business, trade and services as well as the location of the country\u2019s largest airport and seaport.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJakarta will continue to be a megacity \u2014 as a centre for finance and commerce \u2014 for a few more decades, but ultimately it is at severe risk to climate change,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Shifting from problem-plagued Jakarta would also transfer Indonesia\u2019s power base off Java island, where about half of the sprawling archipelago\u2019s 260 million people live.<\/p>\n<p>He said that his government is still drafting a law on the new capital which will need to be approved by Parliament.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Indonesia\u2019s president says the country\u2019s capital will move from overcrowded, sinking and polluted Jakarta to a site in sparsely populated East Kalimantan province on Borneo island, known for rainforests and orangutans.
