{"id":8483,"date":"2019-08-25T10:28:23","date_gmt":"2019-08-25T05:28:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/?p=8483"},"modified":"2019-08-25T10:28:23","modified_gmt":"2019-08-25T05:28:23","slug":"indias-former-finance-minister-arun-jaitley-died","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/eng\/archives\/8483","title":{"rendered":"India&#8217;s Former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley Died"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The former Indian finance minister Arun Jaitley\u00a0 has died in a New Delhi hospital after a prolonged illness.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Jaitley, 66, was a close aide of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and a senior member of the governing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).<\/p>\n<p>Jaitley had held the finance portfolio in Modi\u2019s Hindu nationalist-led government since 2014 but chose not to run for reelection because of poor health.<\/p>\n<p>He was diabetic and had bariatric surgery in 2014. He received a kidney transplant in 2018 and travelled to the US last January for unspecified medical care.<\/p>\n<p>He is survived by his wife, son and daughter.<\/p>\n<p>As finance minister during the BJP&#8217;s first term, he was credited with a landmark goods and services tax bill &#8211; India&#8217;s most significant tax reform since independence.<\/p>\n<p>Jaitley also carried out some of Modi\u2019s more controversial economic initiatives, including changes to tax and welfare and overnight demonetisation, which took 86% of cash out of circulation, leaving hundreds of millions of people temporarily without funds.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The former Indian finance minister Arun Jaitley\u00a0 has died in a New Delhi hospital after a prolonged illness.
