{"id":8438,"date":"2019-08-24T15:47:14","date_gmt":"2019-08-24T10:47:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/?p=8438"},"modified":"2019-08-24T15:47:14","modified_gmt":"2019-08-24T10:47:14","slug":"an-inferno-in-the-amazon-worls-urged-brazil-to-take-action","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/eng\/archives\/8438","title":{"rendered":"An Inferno in the Amazon- Worls Urged Brazil to Take Action"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Thousands of fires are ravaging the Amazon rainforest in Brazil &#8211; the most intense blazes for almost a decade.\u00a0The northern states of Roraima, Acre, Rond\u00f4nia and Amazonas have been particularly badly affected.<\/p>\n<p>International pressure may be the only way to stop the Brazilian government from taking a \u201csuicide\u201d path in the Amazon, one of the country\u2019s most respected scientists has said.<\/p>\n<p>The UN secretary general, Ant\u00f3nio Guterres, has urged Brazil to take action. \u201cIn the midst of the global climate crisis, we cannot afford more damage to a major source of oxygen and biodiversity. The Amazon must be protected,\u201d he\u00a0 tweeted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur house is burning,\u201d also tweeted the French president, Emmanuel Macron, who called for emergency talks on the subject at this week\u2019s G7 summit.<\/p>\n<p>But the response to the crisis has been mixed: while Norway and Germany have halted donations to the Brazilian government\u2019s Amazon fund, the EU has recently signed a trade deal with South America, and the UK spent this week focusing on post-Brexit business with\u00a0 Brazil.<\/p>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">Brazil&#8217;s national Institute\u00a0 for Space\u00a0 Research\u00a0 \u00a0has reported 75,000 forest fires were recorded in Brazil in the first eight months of the year (the highest number since 2013 ),\u00a0 with more than half of these being seen in the Amazon region. His son has proposed a bill in Congress that would further weaken protections around indigenous territory and nature reserves.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The world&#8217;s largest rainforest, which produces about 20% of earth&#8217;s oxygen, is often referred to as &#8220;the planet&#8217;s lungs&#8221;, \u00a0spans eight countries and covers 40% of South America , according to the World Wildlife Fund.<\/p>\n<p>More than 30 million people live in the Amazon, which is also home to large numbers of mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles, most of them unique to the region. A new plant or animal species is discovered there every two days.<\/p>\n<div class=\"zn-body__read-all\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>Forest fires are common in the Amazon during the dry season, which runs from July to October.
