{"id":7341,"date":"2019-07-31T09:52:57","date_gmt":"2019-07-31T04:52:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/?p=7341"},"modified":"2019-07-31T09:52:57","modified_gmt":"2019-07-31T04:52:57","slug":"indias-parliament-outlaws-instant-divorce-for-muslims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/eng\/archives\/7341","title":{"rendered":"India\u2019s parliament outlaws instant divorce for Muslims"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>India\u2019s parliament has approved a bill outlawing the centuries-old right of a Muslim man to instantly divorce his wife, drawing accusations of government interference in a community matter.<\/p>\n<p>Indian lawmakers on Tuesday approved a bill to end the Muslim practice of giving triple divorce at a time, two years after the Supreme Court ruled that it violated the constitutional rights of Muslim women.<\/p>\n<p>Narendra Modi\u2019s Hindu nationalist administration has been pushing to criminalise \u201ctriple talaq\u201d, under which a man can divorce by uttering the word \u201ctalaq\u201d, meaning divorce in Arabic, three times in his wife\u2019s presence.<\/p>\n<p>The 99-84 approval was a victory for Prime Minister Narendra Modi\u2019s government. The opposition had blocked the bill for more than a year, as the ruling party lacked majority support in the upper house.
