Google revealed this week that it has ceased all work on Project Dragonfly, its search engine tailor-made for China.<\/p>\n

Google’s controversial plan to launch a censored search engine in China has been “terminated”, according to a company executive.<\/p>\n

The project was reported to have ceased late last year but rumours that it remained active persisted.<\/p>\n

The tailored search engine for the Chinese market was one of several efforts by Google parent company Alphabet that has effectively caused a civil war within\u00a0 the company.<\/p>\n

Google’s prototype Chinese search engine had previously been labelled\u00a0 as “disturbing” by one of the former employee.<\/p>\n

Dragonfly had attracted criticism as a potential means through which Chinese authorities could censor web content and monitor citizens’ behaviour online.<\/p>\n

The investigative documents suggested that Google engineers were at one point working on ways to filter out websites – including the BBC and Wikipedia – from search results, based on web censorship in China.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
