We will continue to work until every possible answer is found and every family that has been waiting can have the clarity and closure they deserve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA quarter century after the day that forever changed our world,\u202fwe are keeping the\u202fpromise\u202fto identify those who died at the World Trade Center in 2001\u202fand return them to their loved ones,\u201d\u202fsaid\u202fChief Medical Examiner Dr. Graham.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis sacred commitment is propelled by our dedication to apply the most\u202finnovative\u202fscientific techniques, and\u202fFIGG represents\u202fa\u202fpromising new addition to our toolkit. Thanks to\u202fthis\u202fcollaboration with the NYPD Investigative Genetic Genealogy Squad,\u202fwe are\u202fgenerating identification leads\u202fthat\u202fotherwise might not have been possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since 2001, OCME has worked to identify the remains of those who died at the World Trade Center using the most advanced forensic science techniques.\u202fThis latest identification is the result of a new collaboration that combines OCME\u2019s forensic capabilities with NYPD\u2019s genealogical expertise.<\/p>\n<p>FIGG pairs specialized DNA technologies with genealogical investigative techniques to produce identification leads that are then confirmed by OCME through DNA or other forensic methodologies.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the new\u202f9\/11\u202fidentification, OCME continues to link\u202fremains\u202fto previously\u202fidentified\u202fvictims so they can be returned to their families. Recent links have been\u202fconfirmed\u202ffor three individuals\u202fusing\u202fFIGG, DNA reference samples obtained through renewed family outreach\u202fand ongoing retesting of\u202fremains\u202frecovered since 2001.<\/p>\n<p>The\u202fnew\u202fidentification\u202fis\u202fthe latest\u202fidentification of\u202fa\u202fWorld Trade Center victim\u202fsince August 2025. Some 1,099\u202fvictims\u202f\u2014 40% of those who died\u202f\u2014 remain unidentified.
