NEWYORK: Sixty percent of the South Asian community has been found to be suffering from cardiovascular diseases, a five-year study on cardiovascular diseases in New York has revealed. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to study conducted among members of the Pakistani, Sri Lankan, Bangladeshi and Indian communities living in New York, around sixty percent of people between the ages of 40 and 84 were found to be suffering from cardiac disease.<\/p>\n

The American Council of Minority Women, in collaboration with NYU, organized a seminar at Coney Island to inform about the results of the study on the Mediators of Atherosclerosis in South Asian Living in America.<\/p>\n

The Mediators of Atherosclerosis in South Asians Living in America (MASALA) Study is the first longitudinal study in U.S. South Asians to understand what factors lead to heart disease and guide prevention and treatment of heart disease.<\/p>\n

The seminar began with recitation of Holy Quran followed by Naat in honor of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).<\/p>\n

A large number of the Pakistani American community participated in the awareness seminar.<\/p>\n

Assistant research scientist of MASALA Haroon Zafar informed the participants about the causes of heart disease through a presentation prepared from data on immigrants’ immigration to the United States, their education, annual income, lifestyle, exercise routine, blood pressure, sugar, high cholesterol, kidney disease, smoking and alcohol consumption, and home remedies for treatment in case of illness.<\/p>\n

Haroon Zafar said that the majority of the Pakistani community among the South Asians living in New York suffer from high blood pressure, sugar and cholesterol and various heart diseases, and more results will be revealed in a year or two.<\/p>\n

During the seminar, the participants also asked various questions.<\/p>\n

Chairperson of the American Council of Minority Women Baza Roohi said that not only youth and men but also women should review their daily activities and diet.<\/p>\n

More than 950 people from the Indian community, 600 Pakistanis, 600 Bangladeshis were included in the MASALA study. A member of the Pakistani community who participated in the seminar Dr. Iffat advised the participants to get a complete medical check-up at least once a year.<\/p>\n

Later, \u00a0representatives from Health First and United Healthcare informed the participants about health insurance, while members of the MASALA study team informed them about the causes of heart disease.<\/p>\n

It is pertinent to mention that MASALA study started this research in three states at the national level in 2021 with NIH funds, and awareness seminars will be held in this regard in the future.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
