With a more centralized approach to data collection, program assessment, and communication, we can cut emissions, strengthen sustainability efforts in our schools, and potentially save money in the school food budget.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>NYC\u00a0Schools\u00a0provides guidance on preventing waste through its food prevention plan, among other resources,\u00a0which aim to\u00a0improve sustainability practices in schools.<\/p>\n<p>These include\u00a0strategies like\u00a0batch cooking, meant to reduce leftovers which may need to be discarded, the \u201coffer vs. serve\u201d method, allowing students to select only some of the food offered, and\u00a0guidance for\u00a0school\u00a0food managers and\u00a0mandatorily\u00a0appointed\u00a0sustainability coordinators, who\u00a0respectively\u00a0train kitchen staff and engage students and staff.\u00a0NYC Schools\u00a0has\u00a0made progress in reducing waste, but a review by the Comptroller\u2019s Office\u00a0identified\u00a0areas for the initiatives to improve.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NEWYORK: A review by the Office of the\u00a0New York City Comptroller released found that while the public school system has made progress in composting food, only about one-third\u00a0of waste is\u00a0currently\u00a0collected\u00a0and diverted from landfill.\u00a0 The review offered\u00a0a series of recommendations for New York City Public Schools to maximize composting\u00a0by centralizing its program and setting clear targets.
