{"id":39465,"date":"2026-01-29T16:57:33","date_gmt":"2026-01-29T16:57:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/eng\/?p=39465"},"modified":"2026-01-29T16:57:33","modified_gmt":"2026-01-29T16:57:33","slug":"mayor-mamdani-details-adams-budget-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/eng\/archives\/39465","title":{"rendered":"Mayor Mamdani details \u201cAdams Budget Crisis\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>NEWYORK: Mayor Zohran Mamdani\u00a0outlined\u00a0the \u201cAdams Budget Crisis,\u201d a fiscal emergency driven by\u00a0years of\u00a0staggering mismanagement\u00a0under\u00a0former Mayor Eric Adams\u00a0that left New York City\u00a0facing\u00a0a $12 billion budget shortfall\u00a0over\u00a0fiscal years\u00a02026 and\u00a02027.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a press conference, Mamdani said the crisis\u00a0stemmed from a pattern of underbudgeting essential services that New Yorkers rely on every day including rental\u00a0assistance, shelter operations, and special education.<\/p>\n<p>For example,\u00a0Adams budgeted $860 million for cash\u00a0assistance\u00a0in fiscal year 2026, even\u00a0though\u00a0current\u00a0projections put the cost at\u00a0nearly $1.7 billion, almost double\u00a0what\u00a0was\u00a0budgeted.<\/p>\n<p>Under the Adams administration, budget gaps were consistently and intentionally understated.<\/p>\n<p>In some programs, the true shortfall is nearly double what was publicly disclosed. Mamdani also pointed to a longer pattern of disinvestment driven by the state. During more than a decade under former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, New York City sent far more revenue to Albany than it received in return.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022 alone, New York City sent $68.8 billion in revenue to Albany-and received just $47.6 billion back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat imbalance\u00a0has\u00a0hollowed out our city\u2019s finances and left us with a chasm that can no longer be sustained,\u201d\u00a0Mayor\u00a0Zohran Kwame\u00a0Mamdani\u00a0said.<\/p>\n<p>Mayor\u00a0Mamdani\u00a0said\u00a0his administration will not allow\u00a0working New Yorkers \u2013 who did not cause the crisis \u2013\u00a0to become victims of\u00a0its\u00a0solution.<\/p>\n<p>He\u00a0reaffirmed\u00a0the\u00a0city\u2019s commitment to balancing the preliminary budget\u00a0for fiscal years 2026 and 2027\u00a0on Feb.\u00a017\u00a0and renewed\u00a0his call to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and most profitable corporations in New York, while\u00a0rooting out waste and inefficiencies in city government.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NEWYORK: Mayor Zohran Mamdani\u00a0outlined\u00a0the \u201cAdams Budget Crisis,\u201d a fiscal emergency driven by\u00a0years of\u00a0staggering mismanagement\u00a0under\u00a0former Mayor Eric Adams\u00a0that left New York City\u00a0facing\u00a0a $12 billion budget shortfall\u00a0over\u00a0fiscal years\u00a02026 and\u00a02027.
