Currently, street tree beds\u00a0\u2014\u00a0some of the most visible parts of New York City that millions of people pass by every day\u00a0\u2014\u00a0have no dedicated mitigation or enforcement teams. With the establishment of these teams, that ends today and continues the Adams administration\u2019s\u00a0\u201cwar on\u00a0rats.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are embarking on a new era of urban pest management.\u00a0Our administration is announcing a\u00a0$877,000 investment\u00a0to\u00a0get rats out of 600,000 street tree beds across the five boroughs,\u201d\u00a0said\u00a0Mayor Adams.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy cleaning up trash and hiring a team of experts to clear out burrows while caring for our trees,\u00a0we are reclaiming public space, fighting rats, and improving quality of life for all New Yorkers. Our administration continues to build on the work we are doing to end the dominance of trash and rats on our streets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRats have historically exploited street tree beds as they sit at the cross section of the private and public realm and are adjacent to food sources and travel pathways,\u201d said\u00a0Director of Rodent Mitigation Corradi.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlong with the tremendous efforts to clean our curbs and educate property owners, the Street Tree Bed Rat Mitigation\u00a0program deepens the Adams\u00a0administration\u2019s commitment to\u00a0creating\u00a0a cleaner and pest-free New\u00a0York\u00a0City.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNew Yorkers love their tree-lined streets, and it&#8217;s our job to ensure that these vital green spaces remain healthy, clean, and safe,\u201d said\u00a0NYC Parks Commissioner Rodriguez-Rosa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor too long, rats in street tree beds have gone unaddressed \u2014 undermining the\u00a0hard work\u00a0of both city agencies and local communities. With this new investment,\u00a0we&#8217;re\u00a0closing that gap. By combining science-based, non-toxic approaches with dedicated staff,\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0protecting our trees, our neighborhoods, and our quality of life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In line with the Adams administration\u2019s work to improve the quality of life for all New Yorkers, these new teams will work alongside property owners in making New York City clean and pest-free.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, street tree beds garnered over 2,300 rat-related 311 complaints annually.\u00a0Until now, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has responded to complaints of rodents in street tree beds. These new\u00a0specialized\u00a0teams will directly address those complaints\u00a0and build on the city\u2019s existing rat mitigation work.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement\u00a0is a continuation of the interagency initiatives\u00a0established\u00a0by the Adams\u00a0administration to enhance the quality of life for all New Yorkers.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past six\u00a0months,\u00a0311 complaints of rodent sightings have decreased.
