It\u2019s also the most expensive piece from the 20th century ever auctioned, according to Christie\u2019s auction house in New York, where the sale took place.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_25718\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25718\" style=\"width: 287px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/AP-Photo-1.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-25718\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/AP-Photo-1-300x200.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"287\" height=\"191\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/AP-Photo-1-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/AP-Photo-1-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/AP-Photo-1.jpeg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 287px) 100vw, 287px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-25718\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo Courtesy: AP Photo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Warhol sale unseated the previous record holder and another modern master, Jean-Michel Basquiat, whose 1982 painting \u201cUntitled\u201d of a skull-like face sold for a record $110.5 million at Sotheby\u2019s in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Christie\u2019s said an unnamed buyer made the purchase Monday night. When the auction was announced earlier this year, they estimated it could go for as much as $200 million.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt\u2019s an amazing price,\u201d said Alex Rotter, chairman of Christie\u2019s 20th and 21st-century art department. \u201cLet it sink in, it\u2019s quite something.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThis is where we wanted to be, clearly,\u201d said Guillaume Cerutti, CEO of Christie\u2019s. \u201cIt proves we are in a very resilient art market.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The proceeds of the sale will go to the Thomas and Doris Ammann Foundation Zurich, which put the painting up for auction.
