{"id":19781,"date":"2021-04-03T19:08:49","date_gmt":"2021-04-03T14:08:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/?p=19781"},"modified":"2021-04-03T19:08:49","modified_gmt":"2021-04-03T14:08:49","slug":"trump-sanctions-lifted-by-biden-icc-hails-new-phase","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/eng\/archives\/19781","title":{"rendered":"Trump sanctions lifted by Biden, ICC hails &#8216;new phase&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Web desk,<\/p>\n<p>The International Criminal Court (ICC) on Friday welcomed US President Joe Biden&#8217;s lifting of sanctions imposed by Donald Trump on the tribunal&#8217;s prosecutor, saying it signaled a new era of cooperation with Washington.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Trump\u00a0administration imposed financial\u00a0sanctions\u00a0and visa ban on Fatou Bensouda and another senior court official last year after she launched an investigation into alleged war crimes by\u00a0US\u00a0military personnel in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p>The head of the group representing The Hague-based court&#8217;s member countries expressed &#8220;deep appreciation&#8221; for the move, which comes as the Biden administration seeks a more cooperative approach on a dispute that has alienated allies.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I welcome this decision which contributes to strengthening the work of the court and, more generally, to promoting a rules-based international order,&#8221; Silvia Fernandez de Gurmendi, head of the Association of States Parties to the\u00a0ICC, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Fernandez said the\u00a0ICC had &#8220;always welcomed the participation&#8221; of the US in achieving justice for war crimes, despite the fact that the US\u00a0did not ratify its founding Rome Statute in 1998.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I trust this decision signals the start of a new phase of our common undertaking to fight against impunity for these crimes,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<p>Fernandez said the\u00a0US\u00a0decision also came at a &#8220;fundamental juncture&#8221; when reforms were being enacted at the court, which has also come under scrutiny over internal matters including judges&#8217; salaries.<\/p>\n<p>US\u00a0Secretary of State Antony Blinken said as he announced the lifting of the\u00a0sanctions\u00a0that he was encouraged by the reforms.<\/p>\n<p>However the new administration has continued to oppose the Afghan probe, as well as a separate investigation into alleged war crimes in the Palestinian territories by\u00a0US\u00a0ally Israel.<\/p>\n<p>Gambian-born Bensouda is leaving her job in June and will be replaced by British human rights lawyer Karim Khan, who now can open his work without the burden of looming\u00a0sanctions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Web desk, The International Criminal Court (ICC) on Friday welcomed US President Joe Biden&#8217;s lifting of sanctions imposed by Donald Trump on the tribunal&#8217;s prosecutor, saying it signaled a new era of cooperation with Washington.
