Hammad Azhar, who took over as the country\u2019s finance minister only two days ago, on March 29, said on Wednesday that the government had decided to resume\u00a0trade\u00a0with\u00a0India, reported local broadcaster.<\/p>\n
Pakistan had suspended\u00a0trade\u00a0with\u00a0India in August 2019.\u00a0 Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, the new finance minister said now the private sector would be able to import 0.5 million tonnes of\u00a0sugar\u00a0from\u00a0India.<\/p>\n
Similarly, he informed, it had been decided to start importing cotton\u00a0from\u00a0India\u00a0also by the end of June this year.\u00a0Hammad said wheat\u2019s support price had been fixed at Rs1,800 per maund.\u00a0He further said that the Pakistani rupee was strengthening against the US dollar.<\/p>\n
The minister said he would continue to seek guidance for the betterment of the country\u2019s economy.\u00a0Hammad said there was a price hike in the entire world due to coronavirus.<\/p>\n
Admitting that increase was witnessed in ghee,\u00a0sugar\u00a0and flour prices, the minister expressed the resolve to work tirelessly to bring the prices of all essential items down.<\/p>\n
He informed that the government had decided to decrease the prices of petrol and diesel by Rs1.55 per liter and Rs3 per liter, respectively.<\/p>\n
Earlier,\u00a0Hammad Azhar\u00a0chaired the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) meeting, which gave a green signal to the import of\u00a0cotton\u00a0and yarn from\u00a0India.<\/p>\n
Sources told local broadcaster that similarly, the meeting also allowed the import of sugar from the neighboring country. They further said that the import of\u00a0cotton\u00a0and yarn from\u00a0India\u00a0would cost Pakistan much less.<\/p>\n
Sources disclosed that historic reduction in\u00a0cotton\u00a0production this year had also taken its toll on yarn.\u00a0It has been learnt that the industrialists have welcomed the resumption of\u00a0trade\u00a0with\u00a0India.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, in a tweet, Federal Finance Minister\u00a0Hammad Azhar\u00a0has said that Pakistan has successfully released Euro bonds.<\/p>\n
