President Joe\u00a0Biden\u00a0on Monday announced the nomination of two\u00a0women\u00a0to lead US\u00a0military\u00a0commands, who will be only the second and third\u00a0women\u00a0to hold such senior\u00a0military\u00a0positions in the United States.<\/p>\n
Three-star army general Laura Richardson was nominated to lead Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), which covers Central and Latin America. She will also receive her fourth star.<\/p>\n
US Air Force General Jacqueline Van Ovost, the only woman to have reached the rank of four-star general, the\u00a0military’s highest, was nominated to head Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM).<\/p>\n
If the Senate confirms their nominations, then Van Ovost and Richardson will follow Lori Robinson, who was the first woman to helm a\u00a0military command. She led Northern Command (NORTHCOM) before retirement in 2018.<\/p>\n
“Each of these\u00a0women\u00a0have led careers demonstrating incomparable skill, integrity and duty to country,”\u00a0Biden\u00a0said while presenting the two\u00a0generals\u00a0during a short speech at the White House.<\/p>\n
“Today is International\u00a0Women’s Day, and we all need to see and to recognize the barrier-breaking accomplishments of these\u00a0women,” he added.<\/p>\n
The US\u00a0military\u00a0has 11\u00a0commands, all led by four-star\u00a0generals.<\/p>\n
Last month, local news papers of US reported that the Pentagon had decided on Van Ovost and Richardson’s nominations as early as last year.<\/p>\n
But, according to news publishers, the announcement was delayed until after the November presidential election because former defense secretary Mark Esper feared then-president Donald Trump would not approve the generals’ nomination due to their gender.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
