{"id":18675,"date":"2021-01-16T20:04:16","date_gmt":"2021-01-16T15:04:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/?p=18675"},"modified":"2021-01-16T20:12:17","modified_gmt":"2021-01-16T15:12:17","slug":"police-obtain-arnab-goswamis-whatsapp-chat-with-ratings-agency-ceo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/eng\/archives\/18675","title":{"rendered":"Police obtain Arnab Goswami\u2019s WhatsApp chat with ratings agency CEO"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"detail-heading\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"story-detail\">\n<p>Mumbai, India,<\/p>\n<p>Police officials in Mumbai obtained WhatsApp conversations showing\u00a0 India&#8217;s firebrand anchor of Republic TV, Arnab Goswami, was regularly communicating\u00a0 the head of ratings company Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) Pratho Dasgupta, said the Indian publications.<\/p>\n<p>According to publication, Mumbai Police have mentioned the relationship in a supplementary charge sheet filed during an investigation into a ratings tampering scandal involving a few news channels in India, including the hyper-nationalist Republic TV.<\/p>\n<p>The publication reported that police have retrieved conversations that are more than 1,000 pages from Dasgupta\u2019s phone.<\/p>\n<p>In the conversation, the BARC CEO was seen asking Goswami to reach out to the government on his behalf at multiple times.<\/p>\n<p>In a conversation on April 4, 2019, just days before the general elections, Dasgupta had asked the Republic TV anchor to stall India\u2019s Telecom Regulatory Authority\u2019s (TRAI) proposal to make the BARC\u2019s viewing data public rather than the council just supplying it to channels.<\/p>\n<p>Dasgupta had told Goswami that if the data was made public then multiple channels could be blacked out by Multi System Operators (MSOs) and Local Cable Operators (LCOs).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith public data, MSOs and LCOs will push you guys for more carriage,\u201d Dasgupta had told Goswami.<\/p>\n<p>In response to his fears, the anchor assured the BARC CEO that when the Narendra Modi-led government returns to power then the TRAI will become toothless.<\/p>\n<p>The publication, quoting the conversations, said that Goswami had also asked Dasgupta to share with him points on how reforms were politically harmful to the government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith channels getting blacked out, impact of messaging on TV will reach lesser people and hence diluted impact,\u201d Dasgupta said in the transcripts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you help by telling AS to tell TRAI to pipe down on BARC?\u201d asked the BARC CEO.<\/p>\n<p>The publication said that the two had made multiple references to \u201cAS\u201d, with whom Goswami purportedly enjoyed a close relationship. It added that the initials were not disclosed in the transcript.<\/p>\n<p>Following the conversation, Goswami responded to the BARC CEO saying that \u201ca strong message has been conveyed to TRAI.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Indian news publisher said that this was not the only time that the BARC CEO had sought Goswami\u2019s help against TRAI.<\/p>\n<p>During the conversation, Dasgupta had told the Republic TV multiple times that he was under pressure from \u201cvested interests\u201d.
