ANKARA\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

China on Friday said that three of the four priority areas, as set out by the US-President-elect Joe Biden, are providing space for cooperation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe most pressing task at the moment is to jointly tackle the pandemic,\u201d China\u2019s State Councilor and Foreign Ministry Wang Yi told a virtual event hosted by the US-based Asia Society.<\/p>\n

Wang said the other two areas where the US and China can cooperate are economic recovery and climate change.<\/p>\n

The two countries are currently witnessing a historic low in bilateral relations.<\/p>\n

\u201cChina-US relations have spiraled down, to the lowest level since the establishment of diplomatic relations, 41 years ago which is not helpful, when global efforts are needed to overcome difficulties,\u201d Wang said.<\/p>\n

He said China-US confrontation would \u201cspell disaster for humanity as a whole\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Chinese minister said the two countries should focus on \u201ccooperation and manage differences, rebuild mutual trust through dialogue to advance world peace and development\u201d.<\/p>\n

He insisted any progress in the bilateral relations would mean mutual respect.<\/p>\n

Wang said 2020 might have seen the \u201cgreatest damage to international relations\u201d while calling out arbitrary foreign interference in internal affairs and the use of sanctions.<\/p>\n

\u201cProtectionism is jeopardizing the global trade,\u201d he noted, urging \u201ccollaboration with each other and other nations\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cChina follows an independent foreign policy based on five principles of peaceful co-existence and we have no intention to compete for hegemony,\u201d Wang said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t export our system or model nor do we seek influence in other nations,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The Chinese foreign minister said the country\u2019s focus is on \u201cdevelopment of the nation and win-win cooperation\u201d with other countries.<\/p>\n

\u2018Rebuilding mutual trust\u2019<\/p>\n

Without naming anyone, Wang, however, said some countries were doing strategic miscalculations by targeting China.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey insist China is the main threat but it is wrong,\u201d he asserted, adding: \u201cTaking on China is going in a wrong direction, China is not, was not and will not be a threat.\u201d<\/p>\n

Referring to the targeting of the Communist Party of China (CPC), Wang said: \u201cAttack on CPC is an attack on 1.4 billion Chinese people. It is not going to succeed it is doomed to fail.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Wang, the systems in the two countries \u201care chosen by their people and are deeply rooted in historical and cultural traditions of the respective nations.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cChina was once buoyed by western powers but those days are long gone,\u201d he said criticizing what he termed as an \u201cattempt to build an international coalition against China.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brushing aside criticism over the rights situation in Uyghur Muslims-dominated Xinjiang region and Buddhist-dominated Tibet, he described them as false narratives.<\/p>\n

Referring to trade-related US restrictions, the Chinese minister called for dialogue and said that the market not imposed deals drive the trade.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are no winners in trade wars. Pressurizing others with tariffs will only hurt oneself in the end. The two sides need to remove man-made barriers, \u201che said.<\/p>\n

Washington and Beijing increased tariffs on goods last year as Trump wanted to balance the $560 billion bilateral trade.<\/p>\n

\u201cChina will continue to grow It is a matter of time when trade imbalance is eased,\u201d the Chinese top diplomat said urging the US to stop \u201coverstretching notion of national security\u201d.<\/p>\n

On maritime issues in the South China Sea, Wang said: \u201cWe need to turn frictions into cooperation in the region\u201d. He said China will continue to work with other countries to maintain freedom of navigation under international law. He added that China will speed up cooperation with the ASEAN nations.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, in a separate statement, China insisted that Beijing is \u201ccommitted to the principle of non-interference\u201d terming any claims about \u201cinfluencing US presidential elections are completely fabricated.\u201d<\/p>\n
