{"id":16895,"date":"2020-09-30T13:18:50","date_gmt":"2020-09-30T08:18:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/?p=16895"},"modified":"2020-09-30T13:18:50","modified_gmt":"2020-09-30T08:18:50","slug":"un-urges-end-to-fighting-in-upper-karabakh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/eng\/archives\/16895","title":{"rendered":"UN urges end to fighting in Upper Karabakh"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>WASHINGTON<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The UN Security Council threw its weight Tuesday behind Secretary-General Antonio Guterres&#8217; call to end fighting in the Upper Karabakh, or Nagorno-Karabakh region.<\/p>\n<p>The council&#8217;s members &#8220;expressed concern over reports of large-scale military actions along the Line of Contact in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone,&#8221; in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They strongly condemn the use of force and regret the loss of life and the toll on the civilian population,&#8221; they added. &#8220;Security Council members expressed their full support for the central role of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs and urge the sides to work closely with them for an urgent resumption of dialogue without preconditions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Border clashes in Upper-Karabakh broke out early Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, two former Soviet nations, have been tense since 1991 when the Armenian military occupied the region, which is an internationally recognized territory of Azerbaijan.<\/p>\n<p>Four UN Security Council and two UN General Assembly resolutions demand the withdrawal of occupying forces.<\/p>\n<p>The OSCE Minsk Group \u2013 co-chaired by France, Russia and the US \u2013 was formed in 1992 to find a peaceful solution to the conflict, but to no avail.
