{"id":16243,"date":"2020-08-17T15:04:01","date_gmt":"2020-08-17T10:04:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/?p=16243"},"modified":"2020-08-17T15:04:01","modified_gmt":"2020-08-17T10:04:01","slug":"3m-british-jobs-at-risk-if-govt-ends-support-scheme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vosa.tv\/eng\/archives\/16243","title":{"rendered":"3M British jobs at risk if govt ends support scheme"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>LONDON<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A progressive British think tank warned that almost 3 million jobs could be lost as the government\u2019s corona virus job support scheme is withdrawn, local news paper\u00a0 reported on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) warned that when the government furlough scheme ends in October, the UK could see levels of unemployment \u201cnot seen since the Great Depression of the 1930s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Office for National Statistics reported last week that the economy shrank 20.4%, plunging Britain officially into the deepest recession of any G7 nation.<\/p>\n<p>Clare McNeil, the institute\u2019s associate director, told local news publisher: \u201cThe chancellor has said he will never accept unemployment as an unavoidable outcome. But by ending the job retention scheme too early, and with no plan for protecting jobs in local lock downs or a second wave, that is precisely what is happening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The IPPR said 1 million jobs would be lost in any event, but the other jobs could be saved if a successor scheme to the furlough program is set up focusing on creating sustainable jobs in the hospitality, entertainment, and construction sectors.<\/p>\n<p>The think tank suggested a new government program that would encourage employers to keep on their employees part-time, where the government would pay 10% of wages for the hours the employee works part-time, and 60% of wages of hours they do not work.<\/p>\n<p>Shadow Chancellor Anneliese Dodds said the report confirmed that an end to the furlough scheme would \u201cplunge the country even further into a jobs crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve already seen nearly three-quarters of a million jobs lost since March, and now millions more risk being lost if the government doesn\u2019t change course,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Chancellor Rishi Sunak told the broadcaster that extending the government\u2019s furlough scheme was wrong, as it trapped people in unsustainable jobs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is wrong to keep people trapped in a situation and pretend there is always a job that they can go back to, that won\u2019t always be the case,\u201d he argued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn those situations it\u2019s better we look forward and provide those people with new opportunities.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LONDON A progressive British think tank warned that almost 3 million jobs could be lost as the government\u2019s corona virus job support scheme is withdrawn, local news paper\u00a0 reported on Sunday.
